Myoelectric pattern recognition and augmented reality for the treatment of Phantom Limb Pain

چکیده

DESCRIPTION In the proposed technology myoelectric activity at the residual limb of amputees is used to predict complex phantom limb movements. These phantom movements are then feedback to the patient in real-time via Augmented and Virtual Reality. The purpose of engaging patients in Phantom Motor Execution is to eliminate Phantom Limb Pain (PLP) by normalizing maladapted brain circuitry and exploiting competitive plasticity. This novel and non-invasive approach has been shown effective in chronic suffers from whom no other treatment worked previously (chronic intractable PLP). EMG signal processing and pattern recognition are used to predict motor volition of distal joints (several degrees of freedom simultaneously). This technology overcomes the limitations of previous PLP treatments such as mirror therapy or VR approaches based on sensorized gloves or motion capture systems. In addition, this approach is suitable for bilateral amputates, home-use, is non-invasive and more engaging as it involves serious gaming. Treatment of phantom limb pain (PLP) based on augmented reality and gaming controlled by myoelectric pattern recognition: a case study of a chronic PLP patient

A variety of treatments have been historically used to alleviate phantom limb pain (PLP) with varying efficacy. Recently, virtual reality (VR) has been employed as a more sophisticated mirror therapy. Despite the advantages of VR over a conventional mirror, this approach has retained the use of the contralateral limb and is therefore restricted to unilateral amputees. Moreover, this strategy di...

Augmented reality improves myoelectric prosthesis training

This paper presents an augmented reality-based interface for the training of myoelectric prostheses. The new interface provides users with a natural and intuitive method to develop the muscles used to control a myoelectric prosthetic. We conducted a study comparing the new system to existing methods and found the augmented reality-based system to be superior in a number of subjective dimensions...

Real-time Classification of Non-Weight Bearing Lower-Limb Movements Using EMG to Facilitate Phantom Motor Execution: Engineering and Case Study Application on Phantom Limb Pain

Phantom motor execution (PME), facilitated by myoelectric pattern recognition (MPR) and virtual reality (VR), is positioned to be a viable option to treat phantom limb pain (PLP). A recent clinical trial using PME on upper-limb amputees with chronic intractable PLP yielded promising results. However, further work in the area of signal acquisition is needed if such technology is to be used on su...

Phantom Limb Pain Management Using Facial Expression Analysis, Biofeedback and Augmented Reality Interfacing

Post-amputation sensation often translates to the feeling of severe pain in the missing limb, referred to as phantom limb pain (PLP). A clear and rational treatment regimen is difficult to establish, as long as the underlying pathophysiology is not fully known. In this work, an innovative PLP management system is presented, as a module of an holistic computer-mediated pain management environmen...

Evidence Note Differences in Myoelectric and Body-Powered Upper Limb Prostheses

Key Points  Research comparing upper limb prostheses is limited.  Body-powered prostheses have demonstrated advantages in durability, training time, user feedback and frequency of adjustment and maintenance.  Myoelectric prostheses have been shown to provide a cosmetic advantage, are more accepted for light intensity work, and may positively affect phantom limb pain when used actively.  Bod...
